African Hospital Praises Support

Morningside Pharmaceuticals supplies medicine to global communities.

Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd’s has received a letter of thanks from an African hospital after donating thousands of pounds of medical supplies to help treat patients being cared-for there.

The donation to St Joseph’s Hospital, in Limbe, Malawi, was made through charity Inter Care – Medical Aid for Africa, based in Syston. The charity specialises in sending high quality medical aid to rural health units in sub-Saharan Africa including Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Ghana and Sierra Leone.

The letter, written to Dr Kotecha OBE, Chief Executive of Morningside, by Sister Mercy Kanyumbu, said: “I wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to you for your kindness and generosity shown to us by way of this donation.

“I am extremely grateful for your invaluable support to the hospital. The medicine will help us improve the quality of service delivery, especially to the poor and vulnerable.

“It is our sincere hope that our relationship and collaboration will continue to grow from strength to strength for the benefit of our people. This will serve the children here and we really appreciate it.”

As well as the donation of medicine, Morningside Pharmaceuticals has also funded Inter Care’s new online stock control system, which helps the charity track the recycled surplus UK medicines and healthcare goods it sends to rural health units in some of the poorest parts of sub-Saharan Africa.

The digital system was the first of its kind since the organisation was set up in 1974 and enables the charity to track the aid it sends to Africa from the point it enters its warehouse, right through to delivery to each health unit.

Dr Kotecha OBE, Chief Executive of Morningside Pharmaceuticals, said: “A significant part of our business specialises in providing essential supplies to aid agencies such as UNICEF, the World Health Organisation and the Red Cross. Much of the medicine supplied globally helps people in desperate need of healthcare, such as those living through the devastating wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“We have been working closely with Inter Care for some time, which carries out amazing work in Africa that helps save thousands of lives each year. I was personally very humbled to receive the letter of thanks from the hospital in Malawi and am very pleased our donation has helped them continue their essential life-saving work within their community.”

Age UK Mini-Bus Sponsorship

Morningside Pharmaceuticals supports Age UK.

About 3.6 million older people in the UK live alone, of which 2 million are aged over 75.

Loneliness is a huge issue in the UK, particularly as 1.9 million older people often feel ignored or invisible.

This is why Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd sponsors an Age UK LeicesterShire & Rutland mini bus. The bus was officially launched in 2017 and is now helping to rescue older people from loneliness by providing essential transport for the charity’s befriending service.

At the launch Morningside’s Chief Executive Dr Nik Kotecha, said: “We wanted to help in some way to reach out to those older people who have found themselves incredibly isolated. This mini-bus will be a life-line for many local older people throughout the Charnwood area and beyond, and we are proud to help the work that Age UK LeicesterShire & Rutland does in the community.”

The Morningside Mini-Bus is fully wheelchair accessible and is now in-use every Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5pm, as well as providing weekend day trips, transport to community activities and day care centres including the very successful Men in Sheds project in Loughborough.

Executive Director of Age UK LeicesterShire & Rutland, Tony Donovan, added: “We are incredibly grateful for the support that Morningside Pharmaceuticals have given us and this transport will provide an essential service for many years to come that will help significantly towards our important work in tackling loneliness and isolation”.

Inter-Care Stock Control System Sponsorship

Morningside Pharmaceuticals supports charity Intercare.

Since 1974 aid charity Inter Care has used a stock-control system to track the essential supplies it sends to Africa.

As the years have gone by the old system had become dated and inefficient, as modern advancements in technology have created digital options for stock control.

In 2017 Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd funded a brand-new online stock control system for the Syston based charity. The new system helps the charity track the recycled surplus quality medicines and healthcare goods it sends to rural health units in some of the poorest parts of Africa.

The benefits of this system to Inter Care and the communities they support are huge, as it enables the charity to track the aid it sends to Africa from the point it enters the warehouse, right through to delivery to each health unit.

As a charity which places recycling at the core of its work, the new system also enables Inter Care to maximise its own in-house recycling by replacing paper record keeping with digital records. Less paper work also means more space to store donated medical aid and less time spent looking through files, which are now accessible at the click of a mouse.

During the launch, Diane Hardy, Inter Care’s General Manager, said: “Thanks to Morningside, Inter Care now has a highly professional and efficient stock control system, putting us at the top of our game for a charity of our size.

“Morningside’s mission is to make quality healthcare an affordable and accessible reality throughout the world, which echoes that of Inter Care. This makes them the perfect partner for our charity and we are hugely grateful and honoured to receive their support.”

Dr Nik Kotecha OBE, Chief Executive at Morningside Pharmaceuticals, added: “By supporting Inter Care with this new IT system, we are helping them to provide life-saving medicines to deprived countries, which need it the most, in-line with National Quality Standards.

“Inter Care do great work in developing countries and Morningside are delighted that we are able to help enhance Inter Care’s Quality Management System.”

CLIC Sargent Sponsorship

Morningside Pharmaceuticals supports the CLIC Sargents Billy's House

Every day 11 more children and young people in the UK will receive the devastating news that they have cancer.

From diagnosis, charity CLIC Sargent’s specialist care teams step in, ready to help, support and guide. They provide a specialist package of support tailored to each young cancer patient and family.

One amazing service the charity provides is free accommodation, for the families of children who have cancer to stay in, while their youngsters are treated.

In Nottingham, a six bedroom large detached property was founded close to the city’s Queen’s Medical Centre, by cancer survivor Billy Greenall.

Due to the incredible work of Billy’s parents and co-chairs of Billy’s Appeal, CLIC Sargent were able to raise more than £2million to develop and open this home in 2009.

Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd were proud to help too and sponsored the house in 2016, to enable families to be able to stay in the accommodation for six weeks, while their youngster received Oncology care.

CLIC Sargent was formed in 2005 after a successful merger between CLIC and Sargent Cancer Care for Children.

Today, the charity fights tirelessly for children and young people with cancer, often when they feel they can’t. They do this individually, locally and nationally, so that they can focus on the important things, like getting well.

And if the worst happens, they work with bereaved families to get them support and to help them cope with their emotional pain.

Healing Little Hearts Support

Morningside Pharmaceuticals supports the Healing Little Hearts charity

Healing Little Hearts supports the treatment of children living in some of the poorest countries in the world.

Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd is pleased to support the charity, which was founded in 2007 by children’s Consultant Intensivist at Leicester’s Hospitals, Dr Sanjiv Nichani, who wanted to provide life-saving help for those without the resources to pay for healthcare.

The list of countries where children have benefitted from the expert volunteers including surgeons, anaesthetists, intensivists and specialised children’s nurses includes: India, Tanzania, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius and now Romania.

Each team of specialist medics stay for one week and operate on between 10 to 12 children per trip. The charity also trains junior doctors and nurses in children’s heart care with the eventual aim of helping the centres to become more self-sustaining.

Since the beginning, Healing Little Hearts has successfully treated over 1,120 babies, children and young people, giving them a completely new life which would not have happened due to the severe shortage of specialists and hospitals able to treat children born with heart defects.

Blog: Benefits of Winning Awards

Dr Nik Kotecha OBE, Chief Executive of Morningside Pharmaceuticals

Dr Nik Kotecha OBE, Chief Executive of Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd, examines how businesses can benefit from award wins.

“We have been honoured to have won a number of awards over the past few years for both our pharmaceutical activities and business success.

“I was personally very humbled to be named Director of the Year by the East Midlands Institute of Directors last year, which was unexpected, and something I’m immensely proud of.

“I think winning awards brings a number of benefits. In terms of staff morale, it certainly brings a boost and makes our employees feel they are part of a successful business with a bright future. Our aim is for our employees to love coming to work, so winning awards, combined with our CSR activity, helps to achieve this.

“Another benefit is the positive affect awards have on building Morningside’s public profile – both locally and nationally. We manufacture quality medicines for UK hospitals and pharmacies, so it’s important that our patients know who is providing their healthcare products. Awards, as well as our extensive CSR activity, help create a positive narrative around our brand that then reflects on the products we supply.

“My advice to businesses, looking to win an award, is to focus on your strengths. Choose an award and a category which aligns well with these strengths and give specific examples for each question, backed up with quantifiable outcomes.”

Airport Video Case Study

East Midlands Airport video.

East Midlands Airport has included Morningside Pharmaceuticals Ltd as a case study in an exclusive video designed to promote exporting from the region.

The video was shot by David James, a specialist in business and strategic communications and producer of the UK Export Advice podcast.

In the video Dr Nik Kotecha OBE, Morningside’s Chief Executive, talks about the company’s exporting successes and experiences, as well as the vital role the airport plays in the business’ supply chain.

The video was filmed to coincide with the airport’s announcement of record-breaking quantities of freight being handling in the year ending March 2018.

In the previous 12 months the airport, which is Britain’s busiest for dedicated freight handling, saw almost £10bn worth of non-EU goods pass through it.

In total 358,477 tonnes of cargo were exported or imported through the airport, which is 9.7% higher than the previous year.
